13 Digit ISBN Numbers

October 1st, 2009

As of January 2007, the book industry began using a 13 digit ISBN, instead of the old 10 digit ISBN. That means all new books published after that date will contain the new 13 digit ISBN and some will contain the old 10 digit ISBN to ease the transition.

We know that a lot of members might have books that don’t have a 13 digit ISBN. So what we’ve done is implemented a converter on the Add Book page. Simply click the link “I don’t have a 13 digit ISBN” and enter in the 10 digit ISBN. Our system will automatically convert it for you. This involves adding 978 to the beginning and another digit at the end.

It’s important that you ensure your ISBNs are correct when adding books as that is the easiest way to find an exact match for your course.

New Design and Features Launched

September 9th, 2009

For the 2009-2010 school year, we set out to completely revamp the entire BooksForSchool.ca web site. We rebuilt the site from the ground up to make it easier to use. We really wanted to simplify the buying and selling process as much as possible. We added two really cool new features to accomplish this.

We added Facebook Connect. You’ll notice the button on the top left hand side of our site. What this allows you to do is login to our site with your Facebook account. If you already have an existing account with us, we’ll let you link the two up. Furthermore, when you add new books, you can push them to your news feed to increase the exposure to your friends.

The second new feature we added is automatic retrieval of book details. Entering book details and searching for pictures now takes less than a second. Simply enter in the ISBN # and click ‘Get Details’ and our system will grab everything about that book. This should save you substantial time when adding your books to our site.

One feature that didn’t make the new site, but will be returning, are watchlists. We’ll post an update to the blog when it’s ready.
